Gender in Non-Western Societies

Gender-roles are just as strict in non-western societies as they are in western society. In fact, male and female are the dominant genders. With that said, several non-western societies created legitimate roles in their cultures for people who are assigned a  gender that does not fit neatly within the western gender dichotomy. Titles and roles of such people vary. To simplify the   discussion of gender,  anthropologists put all the gender variations under the umbrella category of third sex.

Examples:

            Two-Spirits-Native American Culture

            Hijra- Indian culture.
